Role of a teacher in the Digital World

"He/she who dares to teach should never cease to learn." Teaching is an ever-evolving profession not only for the changes in the system of education but also for the challenges of changing times. And the latest challenge is the intrusion of digital world in education. With the smart technology and its popularity comes a greater responsibility on Educators.

Today’s teacher has to compete with monitors which are illuminated with fluorescent light with changing colours on a feather touch. In addition to that, today’s student is a netizen whereas the teachers are not natives of the digital world. The volcano of information, the internet is another mighty challenge for the teacher as everything and anything is just a click away. Plus, gone are the days of reverence and deference, we are living in the times of preference and reference. So, the question is, are we ready to accept these challenges? "If yes, are we equipped to deal with these challenges?". And if not, are we willing to learn...? Are we willing to adapt ?

Are we willing to update and upgrade ourselves?

If the answer to the last three questions are in affirmative, then pray read on. We need to adopt a progressive approach. First, we have to work on our ethics. Today’s kid is smart. He can see through the hypocrisy of teachers who want the student to ration his digital time but they themselves cannot keep their hands off their gadgets. Everything is available on just a click with correct keyword hence we need to first censure our own face time and the content that we put up in our circles. Next, we have to educate our students in digital etiquettes and ethics, make them aware about the rights and wrongs of digital world.We need to teach them Nettiquettes and Nethics for their safe and sound survival in this world.They should be taught that everyone’s privacy needs to be respected. In our society we do not really believe in the concept of privacy. We have to make them understand the importance of drawing lines and set boundaries when required, make them avoid excess of digital world and its side effects if not utilized wisely.

There is absolutely no need to be apprehensive of digital world. No machine can replace the human touch. In fact, a teacher’s role has been increased manifolds because of digital intrusion. Let’s focus more on EQ and SQ i.e. Emotional Quotient and Spiritual Quotient. Digital world just can't do that. The teacher has to be more vigilant and up to date to guide students in these times of digital chaos.

Are we teaching..?

Education of mind without educating the heart is no education at all -Aristotle. And that is what we have been doing since the introduction of the C.C.E pattern by CBSE in all it's affiliated schools. So many parameters to fill, so many evaluations to be conducted, so many formats to submitted with so many dead lines to meet that the educator is metamorphed to a clerk and fulfilling these clerical responsibilities the real objective of teaching is completely forgotten and done with. In our pursuit of sciences, social sciences and life sciences. We have completely tarnished the very fabric of moral sciences viz value education. The western concept of freedom is fully absorbed by our society, while doing so we have very diligently ignored their religious sense of values and duties. In order to make an allrounder out of every student C.C.E Pattern has transformed them into mere robots without any sense of belonging , who further metamorphed into smart machines with unlimited battery power. Thankfully the good sense prevailed and the C.C.E system is shelved for good.

Its my life..on a late cold evening while walking i see a car zooming past suddenly halted right in the middle of traffic...a beautiful hand comes out with a ciggrette between brightly painted fingers.. taps down ashe n vrooms on..changing times..
